Lawson’s, one of Japan’s largest convenience store chains, has an outpost in the small town of Fujikawaguchiko. Tourists have flooded into Fujikawaguchiko to take one specific picture – a shot of Mount Fuji behind a Lawson’s store, where the mountain’s classic elegance contrasts with the store’s modern neon signage. Although Lawson’s has not encouraged visitors to take pictures of their store, the company nevertheless issued a statement addressing the issue on May 5. Many of them headed to the same destinations, crowding Kyoto’s narrow streets and the walking trails of Mount Fuji. And Lawson’s is not the only Japanese tourist destination that has resorted to putting up signs warning visitors of bad behaviors.

BEIJING — ChatGPT-like artificial intelligence is speeding up research and bringing humanoid robots closer to reality in China, home to many of the world's factories. What's changed with the emergence of OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot is the ability of AI to better understand and generate content in a human-like way. While the U.S.-based tech is not officially available in China, local companies such as Baidu have released similar chatbots and AI models. In robotics, the development of generative AI can help machines with understanding and perceiving their environment, said Li Zhang, chief operating officer of Shenzhen-based LimX Dynamics. "It has accelerated our entire research and development cycle," he said.

U.S. stocks have been rather volatile in the past month, but in the past week they had a strong run on hopes of rate cuts. Tech stocks, which would be boosted by rate cuts, have been a big part of that rally — with Meta , Alphabet and Amazon in particular having a strong showing over the past couple of weeks. Elsewhere, analysts are getting more optimistic on China stocks, especially those in the tech sector. Kevin Liu, managing director and strategist at CICC Research, said his conviction call would be a structural barbell allocation with themes including tech names "with high-end upgrading opportunities," among others. Stock screen Against this backdrop, CNBC Pro screened FactSet for stocks from four exchange-traded funds (KraneShares CSI China Internet ETF, Vanguard Information Technology ETF, Invesco China Technology ETF and the iShares MSCI China Multisector Tech ETF) to find stocks that: have beaten the S & P 500's around 9% year-to-date performance.

U.S. President Joe Biden's administration paused a shipment of weapons to Israel last week in opposition to apparent moves by the Israelis to invade the southern Gaza city of Rafah, a senior administration official said on Tuesday. Biden has been trying to head off a full-scale assault by the Israelis against Rafah, where hundreds of thousands of Palestinian have sought refuge from combat elsewhere in Gaza. "As a result of that review, we have paused one shipment of weapons last week. It consists of 1,800 2,000-lb bombs and 1,700 500-lb bombs," the official said. Gold slips as dollar firms, traders brood on rate cut timing

Spot gold was down 0.1% at $2,311.07 per ounce as of 0235 GMT. The dollar index rose 0.1%, making greenback-priced gold more expensive for other currency holders. If the upcoming reports show scary inflation, then the Fed can't cut rates and it will pressure gold, he added. Bullion is used as a hedge against inflation, but higher rates reduce the appeal of holding the non-yielding asset. Markets are currently seeing a 65% chance of a U.S. rate cut in September, as per CME's FedWatch Tool.

The dollar was back on the front foot on Wednesday, making modest gains after earlier losses from renewed bets on Federal Reserve rate cuts this year, while the yen eased towards the 155 per dollar level and kept intervention risks from Tokyo high. Analysts have said that any intervention from Tokyo would only serve as a temporary respite for the yen, given stark interest rate differentials between the U.S. and Japan remain. Analysts expect the central bank to leave the door open to lower interest rates as early as June. The Australian dollar fell 0.2% to $0.6585, pressured in part by a less hawkish outlook from the Reserve Bank of Australia than anticipated after it held interest rates steady on Tuesday.

British biodiversity startup Dendra Systems announced Wednesday it has raised a $15.76 million Series B, as investors continue to pour capital into climate tech. The $15.76 million Series B round was led by Zouk Capital, a London-based private equity firm that has previously backed climate-tech companies such as Green Hedge and Orb Energy. Gold stocks Among Teng's top gold picks is Canadian miner Barrick Gold . Gold ETFs Aside from stocks, Teng recommended that investors consider exchange-traded funds (ETFs) as a good way to gain exposure to the yellow metal. "ETFs are highly liquid and can be bought and sold daily on the open market, making it easy to adjust a portfolio's gold exposure when needed," he said. He added that ETFs with exposure to the mining sector were an "attractive option," highlighting the VanEck Gold Miners ETF ( GDX ) and VanEck Junior Gold Miners ETF ( GDXJ ). While Teng is bullish on specific stocks within the ETFs, he notes that they broadly capture "the most popular large-cap and mid-cap gold miners funds," thereby offering a "relative balance in one's gold portfolio."

Customers of the failed cryptocurrency exchange FTX are poised to recover all of the money they lost when the firm collapsed in 2022 and receive interest on top of it, the company’s bankruptcy lawyers said on Tuesday. The announcement was a landmark in the attempt to recover the $8 billion in customer assets that disappeared when FTX imploded virtually overnight, setting off a crisis in the crypto industry. Those payments would flow from a pool of assets that FTX’s lawyers have pulled together in the 17 months since the exchange collapsed, the lawyers said. The amount owed to customers was calculated based on the value of their holdings at the time of FTX’s bankruptcy in November 2022. A customer who lost one Bitcoin when FTX imploded, for example, would be entitled to less than $20,000, even though a Bitcoin is now worth more than $60,000.
